Exercises for Puffy Eyes

Got Puffy Eyes and Wrinkles forming?

As we age having healthier and younger looking eyes becomes harder to achieve and yet a large part of eye care to prevent eye bags and puffy eyes is really good old common sense.

Those of you who are getting to know beauty therapist Mrs Oorloff will appreciate that this is approach forms the basis for a lot of the beauty treatments she offers.

1. Combat Puffy Eyes

Lie down comfortably and close your eyes. Relax. Then open your eyes and look up holding this pose for around 3 seconds. Then gently close your eyes again. Repeat this to the left and to the right.

Encouraging movement of your eyes will assist with the flow of lymph and blood and stop those systems becoming stagnant and causing that nasty eye ‘puffiness’. This little routine will also help you maintain brighter eyes.

2. Eradicate those Eye Wrinkles and Crows Feet

You can fight against the development of crows feet and wrinkles around the eye through eating a healthy diet. We all know this but the face it good nutrition improves the vision of your eyes, making them appear and therefore younger brighter.

Eat the colours of the rainbow to ensure you absorb all the anti-oxidants needed to halt the destruction of healthy tissue and it will ultimately assist in the prevention of wrinkles. A steady combination of phyto-nutrients will keep the skin around the eyes firm and looking younger.

3. Flush out Puffy Eyes and Eye Bags

Increasing your water intake to flush your system through prevents the body holding on to water and causing pools of stagnant waste i.e. puffy eyes.

4. Regulate your Fluid Retention with Lots of Sleep

Sleep is totally under rated as a beauty treatment. When we sleep we self heal and regulate the fluid in our bodies transferring them to where the body needs it instead of allowing it to build up in places we don’t want it like those puffy eyes, ankles and faces.

5. Rid yourself of Facial Wrinkles Right Now

The two main vices older women share are imbibing too much caffeine and, unfortunately, smoking! Both of these habits damage and destroy the essential vitamin C needed to rebuild skin tissue. There really is no advantage to smoking! It will prematurely age your skin and create serious wrinkles before your time.

If you are sufferer try applying cool tea bags or cucumber slices to your eyes daily as the tannin in tea bags reduces swelling and discoloration and cucumber slices have long been used to reduce puffiness and refresh the appearance of skin around the eyes. Leave them on for about 10-15 minutes. Keep your eyes closed.

It’s hard to give up the way we already live and finding time in the day for little adjustments that can affect our appearance and longevity isn’t easy but a few minutes doing eye exercises before falling into a healing sleep could be just the ticket to younger, healthier looking eyes and skin!

Here’s a lovely video to illustrate just what I mean.

Fighting off the Effects of Aging with Mrs Oorloff’s Anti Ageing Facial Treatments

At one time or another we’ve all thought about fighting off the effect of aging through invasive measures such as facelifts, breast augmentation and liposuction but is it really necessary?

To some women, the answer is yes, cosmetic surgery is the way forward for them to feel comfortable in their own skin but there are many alternatives too.  As life expectancy has increased so too has our desire to look younger for longer and to this end we persue every avenue but are we really aware of every technique available to us to help us look younger?

Our skin is subject to a myriad of ‘attacks’ every day from harsh sun rays to pollutants in the air.  It’s hard to avoid it but there are ways to look and feel better without invasive surgery.

We’ve explored some of them for you to provide some clear direction on how you can harness the power of anti aging techniques like Mrs Oorloff’s series of anti aging facial treatments.

In short Mrs Oorloff advocates natural beauty and anti aging techniques and advices her clients to consider lifestyle changes to help acheive this extended longevity such as:

1.  Stop smoking

Giving up smoking is the quickest way to improve your skin quality.  Smoking causes biochemical changes to your skin cells and damages and reduces collagen and elastin meaning that your skin will wrinkle and sag much faster than a non smoker.   You can always tell a smoker from the lip lines on the mouth area too and research tells us that smokers aged 20 plus show wrinkle development from smoking.  Besides it’s cheaper to give up smoking than pay a plastic surgeon!

2.  Eat Proper Food more Often

There is truth in the adage ‘You are what you eat’.  Our bodies take out what they need from our food and if you live on the wrong foods you absorb the wrong nutrients.  It’s that simple.  A little bit of everything is good for you but there are foods that actually combat the aging process while others increase it.

Foods containing antioxidants are great for anti ageing and easy to blend into your diet on a daily basis.  Look for foods like colourful vegetables – those with vitamin C and E have been shown to neutralize free radicals by stabilizing them. The theory goes that the more antioxidants (like vitamins C and E and beta carotene) are consumed through food, the less chance free radicals have to damage cellular structures, including skin cells. Cold water fish are another great source as are blueberries!

Don’t get into the dieting loop.  Remember that your body needs smaller meals more often as you age so eating a good breakfast, a snack, a decent sized lunch, a mid afternoon snack and a small supper is perfect if you’re in your forties and need to maintain a lower body weight.

3.  Exercise yourself Younger

The overall loss of muscle mass as we age is natural but can be avoided through simple resistance weight training.  For women Curves Health Clubs are perfect for this as they are based on a quick half an hour resistance training intersperced with a little cardio.  Resistance training stops our motor neurons dying off to early.  Motor neurons control muscle fibers and when they die it causes the muscle to wither.   This is what gives us those horrendous ‘bye bye arms’.  So get resisting ladies!

4.  Stay out of the Sun to Avoid Aging

I can’t say it loud enough.  The sun destroys your skin.  It’s that simple.  It’s the biggest cause of aging among women on the globe.  You can enjoy it but use sun block, hats and sun glasses.  Remember sun block on your decolletage and the backs of your hands as well…… they show your age too.   Wear pretty wraps and shifts over your swim suit and please, please don’t lie in it cooking this Summer!

5.  Get Rid of the Stress in your Life to Stay Younger

Geneticists have found that stress shortens the lifespan of cells in the body.  Stress is one of the single most causes of cancer.  Stress tells in your face and your body.  By reducing stress in our lives we increase our longevity because we sleep better, laugh more and feel good.  Exercise helps rid us of stress as it releases those feel good hormones.  Yoga and meditation is another way of combatting the symptoms of stress related illness. Think how young happy people look.  It’s simple really and nothing Noah didn’t know way back.  He lived to over 300 years old!

A Few Top Tips on Using Sunscreen

What a joy to write an article about using sunscreen!  It means Summer is finally here and I need to talk to you all about skin care and protection.

Most of us believe that we only need to apply sunscreen on those gorgeous, hot, sunny days in July and August.  Unfortunately that’s just not true.  You should really be applying sunscreen every day to prevent early ageing and sun spots developing from harmful UV rays.

Sunscreen is not a replacement for your daily moisturiser though.  It should be used as a ‘veil’ under your moisturiser to protect your skin from the elements.  It should also be applied to the décolleté and neck area as they are even more delicate than your face and need more protection.

You need to remember that clouds don’t stop UV rays doing harm to our skin.  Water and sand reflect the suns rays and increase the bad effects so even if you’re walking by water, you need that protection.

Sunscreen is like any other cosmetic and you need to choose the right one for your skin type.  Do a quick patch test to check you’re not allergic to any of the ingredients in the sunscreen especially if you have sensitive skin.  Also remember you’ll burn just as quickly if you have a dark skin as you do with a fair skin and blemished caused by sun exposure show up on all skin types and shades.

Apply your sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going out so it has time to work.  If you don’t you might as well leave it off for the good it will do you.

A really important tip for you:  If you are applying sunscreen take the few extra seconds to apply it to the back of your hands too.  The back of our hands is one of the main areas we show our age and the hardest to prevent.  Daily application of a strong sunscreen will help your hands look younger for longer.

I go and see Mrs Oorloff on a regular basis for beauty treatments.  It’s not all about beauty treatments though, I also go to Mrs Oorloff because she makes me feel so much better about myself, how I look and feel and my mindset is so much calmer after I’ve had her tender ministrations.

Most of my appointments are for a facial, a massage, a manicure and a pedicure and what I love about Mrs Oorloff is that she assigns time to you, not the specific treatment.  In this way I usually end up getting a few wonderful extras like a hand massage while my face mask dries or a sinus and scalp massage with eucalyptus if I’ve a cold.  She treats all of me even if I’m only there for a simple beauty treatment.

In Mrs Oorloff’s salon there’s every luxury from the heated bed to the fluffy pillows and foot rests and it’s all bound together by her own calming and very caring attitude to each person she treats.

I’ve been in Oxford for two years now and I’ve tried so many different beauticians but none compare to Mrs Oorloff and so, I recommend all my friends to her and ensure that I get there at least once in six weeks.

Email me if you want to know more on jane.vanvelsen@gmail.com I’m really happy to tell you what I’ve experienced.

A Few of the Treatments we Don’t Offer at Mrs Oorloff’s

I hear a lot of my clients talk about enhancing their looks through unnatural means and it really makes my skin crawl.

While I agree we all want to look our best, I do believe that every woman can look fantastic by sticking to a few basics like drinking enough water, using a good moisturiser, being toned and maintaining a healthy weight and most of all by being happy!

Here are some of the things we don’t offer but that I’ve helped ladies recuperate from once they’ve gone ahead with them.  Every procedure is invasive and does affect your skin and well being for a while.  We aim to treat our ladies more holistically and this aids recovery and lends natural beauty. Enjoy.

Thread Lift
This cutting-edge face-lift technique actually requires no cutting edges. Instead, tiny strings, which act as pulleys, are inserted underneath the skin and attached to the facial tissues. During an hour-long procedure, the strings are stretched, which causes the skin to pull on itself. Dr. Grossman says it’s for a patient who’s not quite ready for a facelift. “The perfect candidate for thread-lift is someone with mild jowling and a little looseness in the neck,” she says. “The threads actually stay underneath the skin. And the nice thing is later, if you begin to age a little, you tighten them or put another one back in and lift it back up.”

Fat Transfer
Many women find their faces sink with age; one of the new ways to plump back up is an innovative procedure called fat transfer. Fat is removed from a place you don’t want and is injected into specific places in your face to emphasize bone structure and reduce sinking skin.

While it seems obvious that fat transfer works for those whose skin sinks, it also works for those whose skin sags. “We’ve always looked at people who sagged and always thought we just had to pull them up,” Dr. Grossman says. “But as we’re understanding aging better, we actually know that even with saggers, they need to be filled up, too.”

Hylaform
For those who worry about the thinner lips, feather wrinkles and nasal labial folds that come with age, there is a new FDA-approved filler called hylaform. Made from hylaronic acid, hylaform plumps the skin. “As you get older, the lips begin to lose their volume,” Dr Grossman says. “[Hylaform] just gives you a little bit more fullness.”

  • To get similar results at home, Dr. Grossman worked with Prescriptives to develop Intensive Rebuilding Moisturizer. She says the progressive “build and fill” technology of the product works within the skin to strengthen, firm and lift while it also works on the outer layer of the skin to decrease the appearance of surface line and wrinkles.
