Hyperpigmentation sometimes known as Dark spots, age spots, sun spots and melasma is a common and a harmless condition which can occur anywhere on the body. To most people who suffer from it, it is a very unwanted condition that can effect self-esteem.

Hyperpigmentation It is caused through stimulation of your pigment cells called Melanocytes which produce the pigment called Melanin resulting in visible darker patches on the skin. The effects can become more obvious with age. If pigmentation is left untreated and unprotected, it can worsen which is why it is important to treat and prevent.

  • What causes pigmentation?

There are many causes of hyperpigmentation these include:

    • Overexposure to the sun which is the main cause of pigmentation
    • Hormonal changes i.e pregnancy
    • Certain medications such as antibiotics, hormone treatment i.e. the pill
    • Inflammation and skin injuries such as acne
    • Picking at the skin
    • Heredity

Pigmentation can take up to 10-20 years to develop and become visible on the skins surface, if you notice pigmentation now it could have been caused when you were a child.

  • How to prevent pigmentation?

We advise taking the following precautions to improve and prevent hyperpigmentation:

    1. Wearing a sunscreen daily of SPF 30+ and avoiding excessive sun exposure. Dermaquest have a great range of hydrating, oil free sun protections.
    2. Exfoliate regularly to slough off the build-up of dead skin cells for an even skin tone. Dermaquest  Peptide Glycolic Cleanser or mini pumpkin peel are great.
    3. Using a melanin suppressant product daily (dermaquest skin brite cream) to prevent the hyperpigmentation getting any worse.
